I am constantly amazed that U.S. citizens are not demostrating in the streets over how much money and lives we continue to spend on these wars. When are we going to learn?

You say "in thirty years" we may regret the 2012 expenditure in Afghanistan. We should know well before thirty years just how misguided our policies in both Iraq and Afghanistan were to our national priorities. But even more important than our analysis of national priorities, we'll understand just how harmful to those very priorities and our own sense of national strength they really were. In thirty years, we'll certainly look back and see how harshly history has judged the decline of our national resources in those misguided wars.

I frequently hear politicians say "we need to stay in Iraq and Afghanistan" but I have not heard one of them say how he or she intends to pay for this war or finance all the infrastructure work that needs to be done at home.
The "root" cause of this is us, "we the people" who sit silently by and not ask them the obvious question.
When are we going to take control of our government?

Its the military brass who control all aspects of the war. And Congress. Too bad that our brass is the most incompetent bunch of uniforms ever..despite trillion$ and all sorts of resources they can't wipe out AQ which never numbered even 1000 on 9/10, and now maybe 100, or the Taliban, which at most is 30,000 on both sides of the Durand Line and only among the Pushtoon tribes thereon.

This is a very good war for our Junker class. Praise non stop from the ignorant public, miniscule caualties..4000 out of 1 million deployed which is much much less than the rate nationally for men 18-30. Of course very few Junkers have died in combat..90% are grunts.

Patriotism here is the last refuge of the scoundrels milking the war budget!

Florida Veterans has called for a military withdrawal from Afghanistan long ago. As your article notes, the politicans don't "Get It."

How can a true grass-roots organization like ours to persuade the politicians and others in the national security establishment and administration that we're headed down a counterproductive, wasteful road?

The Arabs Shia are the winners and the US the lsoer. The Shia have defeated both Saddam and the US and will never be subservient to the Persian. Still Iran is a neighbor, was a refuge for the Shia, and the only country to protect them when they were being killed by Saddam.

American pundits and faux experts conveniently overlook the fact that the US backed Saddam's slaughter of the Shia especially after 1980, when the brunt of casualties and death in the Saddam's war on Iran were overwhelmingly borne by the pressganged Shia who made up to 90% of front line troops. The US provided Saddam with arms, including chemical and biological weapons in this proxy war against Iran.

Adding insult to injury, Bush 1 backstabbed the Shia when he urged them to rise against Saddam with promise of support and when they did he let Saddam slaughter them.

And don't forget the Waffen SS behavior of the US mercenaries in 03-05.
